CHARMING TOWNS AROUND LA BISBAL

La Bisbal is part of a landscape that is full of tiny charming villages: mediaeval walled villages, castles, monasteries, churches, country houses, bell towers, narrow streets or the houses built of stone.

In other eras, La Bisbal was on a boundary line and its Castell Palau was threatened by the count of Empúries at Castell d’Empordà. On the other side, the village of Sant Pol has a Romanesque church. The Monastery of Sant Miquel de Cruïlles, also Romanesque, is one of the nearest attractions, where recently some romanesque-gothic paintings have been restored. Cruïlles also conserves ruins and walls of a mediaeval castle of the Catalan lineage bearing the name of the village.

Very close to La Bisbal is Peratallada, one of the most remarkable mediaeval ensembles in the country: three walled complexes, Romanesque church, porticoed square and a castle. From here one can travel to Pals, the other significant mediaeval ensemble.

Very close by are villages such as Monells, an important mediaeval market town with porticoed streets and a remarkable main square, Vulpellac, the Romanesque church of Canapost, the Gothic church and bell tower of La Pera or the Gothic temples of Rupià and Foixà.
